Here we are eagerly waiting for the third and final season of our beloved Squid Game series. It seems like just yesterday we were moving away from the gloom and depression of a global pandemic and falling in love with this South Korean dystopian survival story. It was such a hit that Netflix ordered another two seasons.
I had mixed feelings about the second installment of this story since it didn’t end on a more complete note than the first season did. But we no longer live in the era of waiting a week, sometimes two, for new episodes of our favorite shows. I understand that Netflix needs to find ways to keep us invested. If that means stretching out the plot into two seasons when it could have been wrapped up in one, so be it. I don’t mind spending more time with Lee Jung-Jae and the rest of the amazing cast of actors who help bring this captivating and thought-provoking story to life.
So, in both anticipation and celebration of Netflix releasing Squid Game 3, here are my top three predictions for what will happen in the series finale. Spoiler warning for the first two parts if you’ve been procrastinating on starting this amazing show!
Player 456 Becomes The New Front Man
If you watched the most recent season of this show, you know that our protagonist, Gi-hun, aka player 456, won the last squid game competition, but he re-entered the game in hopes of stopping it. His goal was to end the inhuman event for good and save the lives of the other competitors. However, the Front Man goes undercover as a player to ensure that this doesn’t happen. He befriends Gi-hun and even helps him win a few challenges before ultimately turning on him after a rebellion starts that could’ve been successful with his intervention.
We only know three things for certain about the Front Man: he was a former winner of the game, his real name is In-ho, and he is the missing brother of another character, retired police detective Jun-ho. We don’t know anything about his past or what led him to want to participate in the games, to begin with, but there is something we know about every participant: they are in debt of some kind. Who's to say that In-ho doesn’t have the same backstory as player 456? My prediction is that Gi-hun defeats the Front Man, but ultimately ends up taking his place.
But what would make him do that? Maybe they threaten his family? Gi-hun does have a daughter. And we do know that the people who run the game have a file on each player who has ever played the game. My guess is that within those files, they have collected information on each player’s loved ones, home addresses, and maybe even medical records. I think his daughter will be used as leverage against him to force him into servitude and continue the games as the new Front Man.
Player 120 Wins the Game
In the most recent season, we met many new characters. One fan favorite was player 120, Cho Hyun-ju, a former soldier and transwoman, who entered the game in the hopes of winning the money to fund her gender-affirming surgeries and moving to Thailand. She forms an alliance with player 456 and some of the other contestants, which leads to her revealing her military background.
During the rebellion led by Gi-hun, she proved her fortitude and strength on an entirely new level. Previously, she demonstrated her leadership qualities by instilling mental focus in her teammates. She seems like the kind of person who will do whatever it takes to win if she needs to. Based on how the last season ended, the games will continue, and the remaining players will be forced to keep participating. If all hope of ending the game is lost, I predict that player 120 will return to her original goal of being the victor and using the money to build a better life for herself.
The only thing that might stand in her way is the people she has built a bond with. This includes the mother and son duo, player 149, Jang Geum-ja, and player 7, Park Yong-sik, and the pregnant player 222, Kim Jun-hee. I’m interested to see what happens if player 120 has to choose between herself and the friends she’s made along the way. After the first season, we saw three allies almost make it to the end. Like in any competition, allies only last so long. Once they have served their purpose, it's back to every man for themselves.
Player 456 Dies and Detective Jun-ho Ends The Game
If this is the end for Squid Game, they have to wrap things up for our main character’s story. I hate to be a downer, but this man is not getting a happy ending. I can’t imagine a scenario where he comes out on top at this point in the story. My prediction is that if the games do come to an end, it will cost Gi-hun his life. But if he dies, how will we be assured that the games will come to an end?
I bet that Detective Jun-ho will be able to somehow expose the games to the world, forcing the powers that be to put a stop to it. After all, he did successfully infiltrate the games and make it out alive. We now know that his brother was partially responsible for his survival, but he made it pretty far all on his own. We could even have a thrilling conclusion that involves player 456 sacrificing himself so that Jun-ho can make it back off the island a second time with proof of the game’s existence.
The writers could have let Jun-ho’s story end with being shot by his brother and falling to his death, but they brought him back for a reason. I think his storyline will play a major role in the finale of this series. If he does not end up being the hero that saves the day, I think it's very possible that he also dies in a standoff-style situation with his brother, where he is forced to choose between his family and what is morally right.
I’m excited for this next season of Squid Game, and this might be controversial, but I’m hoping that this is the true end…I don’t want any cash-grab spin-offs or for the story to go on longer than it needs. I’m super grateful to all the amazing individuals who worked to bring this experience to life for us, but like any artist will tell you, eventually you have to move on to something new or else you’ll never grow.
